Frequently asked questions
It’s completely flexible, and scalability can be planned to meet your business needs. Considerations are business growth, employee numbers and likely demand, and finally budget. So you can start small with one or two charging points, then expand at your own pace. One thing you can bank on is that scalability is important due to the exponential growth of the EV market.
There are 3 levels of EV charger points. Level one is not normally recommended for a commercial operation because it is restricted on charging speed and smart technology for measuring individual usage. Therefore levels 2 and 3 are favoured by a wide range of businesses, who are ready to embrace electric vehicle charging and enjoy all of the current and future benefits.
You may wish to provide the service for free now, but as electric cars will rapidly increase in numbers you should think ahead. It may become expensive to continue offering free charging as more EV drivers come on board, leaving you with a difficult decision to ‘pull the plug’ at a later date.
Not yet it isn’t but that will undoubtedly change. If you want to avoid the possibility of having to replace your chargers within a few years, or even months, you should invest in a solution that either comes with the functionality to monitor electricity supplied per individual, or is capable of adding it at a later date.
You can charge electricity usage by charging time or kWh usage. For the latter, you will need a MID approved kWh meter to use as a basis for billing. Depending on the products and system you choose, there will be differences in operation, so we recommend that you talk to a Spheretech systems advisor for some helpful advice.
The Government Office for Zero Emission Vehicles is offering up to £14,000 towards the cost of installing EV chargepoints, under the Workplace Charging Scheme (WCS). You can find out more about the WCS scheme using this link.
To install a commercial EV chargepoint you would typically be expected to pay between £1,000 and £1,500 + VAT, depending on the charger model and number, communication set up, cabling, and charger location fixings etc.
It can take anything from a few minutes to as long as 24 hours, depending on a number of factors. Battery size, plug type and charger power (typically 50kW up to 350kW) will dictate charging times, and choosing the right charger for your business is an important decision that can have significant implications on costs and revenue. To help you make the right decisions, Spheretech will be delighted to offer a free, no obligation survey as well as expert advice about the charging systems available, and how they can meet the needs of your business.
